8 Days Motorcycle Tour from Ouarzazate
This 8 days motorcycle tour from Ouarzazate is an enduro tour in Morocco that takes you deep into the Sahara and across two great dune seas. Over 8 days and 7 nights you ride about 1,144 km on six riding days, crossing the dry Lake Iriqui, the dunes of Erg Chegaga, the old Dakar Rally tracks near the Algerian border and the tall dunes of Erg Chebbi at Merzouga, then heading back over the Jebel Saghro mountains and through the Dades Gorge. A local guide rides with the group, an assistance car follows with luggage and spare parts, and the nights are spent in hotels with pools and a desert camp.
Why this Sahara desert motorbike tour is different
This route links Erg Chegaga and Erg Chebbi on one trip, on fast sand tracks, dry riverbeds and soft fesh-fesh, with a free afternoon to play in the highest dunes in Morocco before the mountain stage. It is an adventure motorcycle tour in Morocco for riders who want real desert, not just a day in the dunes. Our team has more than 16 years of experience in southern Morocco, so every fuel stop, lunch spot and camp on this Morocco motorbike tour is chosen from long local knowledge.

Sahara desert motorbike tour route
The loop leaves Ouarzazate and heads south to Foum Zguid, then crosses Lake Iriqui and Erg Chegaga to Ouled Driss near M’Hamid. From there it follows the Draa Valley and the old rally tracks east to the Ouzina desert camp and the dunes of Merzouga. The return climbs west over the Jebel Saghro mountains to the Dades Gorge and finishes in Ouarzazate.
Day-by-day itinerary
Day 1: Arrival in Ouarzazate
No riding
Your trip begins in Ouarzazate. We pick you up at Ouarzazate airport and drive you to your hotel. Coming from Marrakech? We include a free private transfer to Ouarzazate, about 4 hours by road. Later in the day your guide hands over the motorcycles, checks the paperwork and walks you through the route and the group riding signals. Dinner is served at the hotel.
Day 2: Ouarzazate to Foum Zguid
About 203 km, off-road and sand
A short stretch of tarmac leads out of town, and then the first track begins. The next 80 km or so stay off the road, giving you time to get a feel for the bike and the ground. The trail twists, climbs and drops, with some patches of loose stone. After a break back on the asphalt, you ride a long section of firm, quick sand trail that keeps changing direction, so stay alert. In the afternoon the route crosses gentle desert hills and a plateau before dropping into Foum Zguid, where a hotel with a big pool waits at the end of the day.
Day 3: Foum Zguid to Ouled Driss through Erg Chegaga
About 170 km, sand and dunes
Today is all about sand. After refuelling in Foum Zguid, rocky ground soon gives way to the dry bed of Lake Iriqui, which you cross at speed for around 40 km to reach the western edge of the Erg Chegaga (opens in a new tab) dunes. Confident riders can tackle a stretch of medium dunes on the way to the lunch camp, while others follow an easier track around them. A long sandy riverbed comes before lunch. In the afternoon you cross a plateau and a few small dunes, meet the asphalt again at M’Hamid, and ride a few kilometres on to your hotel with a pool.
Day 4: Ouled Driss to the Ouzina desert camp
About 221 km, fast desert tracks
A fast day close to the Algerian border. After fuel in M’Hamid, small dunes and sandy riverbeds lead north through the palm groves of the Draa Valley. Back in the open desert, expect a few routine army checkpoints, so keep your passport within reach. The route then follows wide, fast desert tracks once used by the Dakar Rally (opens in a new tab), passing a stone cairn that remembers a rider who lost his life here in 2007. Lunch is at a lodge on the edge of Lac Maider, a huge dry lake. The last 60 km cross sand and fine fesh-fesh dust to the Ouzina camp, where you can climb a tall dune for sunset, then enjoy dinner around the fire with local drummers.
Day 5: Ouzina to Merzouga and the Erg Chebbi dunes
About 97 km, sand and rocky tracks
A shorter riding day, so you have more time in the dunes. The track from camp crosses a wide plain dotted with acacia trees that looks more like East Africa than Morocco, with sandy and rocky sections along the way. You reach Merzouga in the late morning, settle into your hotel and head straight out onto the sand of Erg Chebbi (opens in a new tab), the tallest dunes in Morocco, with some rising more than 150 metres. After lunch and a rest by the pool, you ride back into the dunes in the late afternoon and watch the sunset from one of the high crests.
Day 6: Merzouga to the Dades Gorge over Jebel Saghro
About 261 km, desert and mountain tracks
The longest day of the tour, quick in the desert and slower in the mountains. The first part retraces a section of yesterday’s route, and then new trails take over. Before lunch you face a tough stretch along the Gheris riverbed, followed by fast rides across open plateaus and some big sand climbs where dunes spill over the hills. Lunch is a homemade tagine at a small inn in a desert village. In the afternoon, hard sand tracks and a long sandy riverbed lead into the Jebel Saghro mountains. Tonight’s hotel in the Dades Gorge has a rooftop pool and a buffet dinner.
Day 7: Dades Gorge to Ouarzazate
About 192 km, off-road
The last riding day heads west through the Dades Gorge along the foothills of the High Atlas. Quick tracks alternate with rocky paths through deep gorges and ravines until you reach a plateau for a picnic lunch. A winding sandy riverbed and a final fast run across a flat plateau bring you back to Ouarzazate and the hotel from the first night. The bikes are returned and checked, and the evening is free for a farewell dinner.

What riders say
Good to know before you ride
Riding level
This is an enduro tour with long sections of sand and dunes, not a road trip. You should be an experienced rider who is comfortable on dirt tracks, loose gravel, river crossings and sand. The guide sets a steady pace and waits for the group.
Licence and documents
Bring your passport and a valid motorcycle licence. We handle the bike paperwork on the first afternoon.
Riding gear
Helmet, boots, gloves and body protection are included, so just tell us your sizes when you book. You may want to bring your own goggles or a hydration pack. Mornings can be cold and afternoons are hot, so wear layers that are easy to remove.
Best time to ride
October to April and the cooler weeks of spring have the best temperatures for off-road riding in the south. In midsummer, daytime heat on the plains is extreme and we do not recommend the tour.
Fuel and distances
Daily distances are 97 to 261 km, but off-road riding is slower than the distance suggests. Fuel stops are planned in advance, and the assistance car carries a spare supply.
Currency & payments
The local currency is the Moroccan Dirham (MAD). Hotels in Ouarzazate take cards, but carry cash for small purchases, lunches and tips in rural areas.
Tipping
Tipping is customary in Morocco. A general rule is 10% in restaurants and a lump sum for your guide and the assistance driver at the end of the trip.
Connectivity
Phone signal is limited on the trails and at the desert camp. Download offline maps beforehand and enjoy the quiet.
Motorcycle tour FAQ
How much does the 8-day motorcycle tour from Ouarzazate cost?
The price depends on the size of your group. Each rider in a group of 3 or more pays €2780, each rider in a group of 2 pays €3892, and a solo rider pays €5004. All prices include the KTM 450 EXC, fuel, riding gear, hotels, the desert camp, the guide and the assistance car, and may vary with your travel dates. The pricing section above shows what is included.
Which motorcycles can I hire for the tour?
We rent KTM 450 EXC motorcycles, 2024 and 2025 models, all prepared for off-road riding. Tell us your height and riding experience when you send your request, and we will confirm the bike and availability for your dates. See our guide to Morocco Motorcycle Tours (opens in a new tab).
Do I need to be an experienced rider?
You should have off-road experience and be comfortable riding for several hours a day on dirt tracks, rocks, riverbeds and sand. If you have any doubts, message us before booking and we will give you honest advice. To know what to pack for the trip, read What to Wear in Morocco (opens in a new tab).
Is it safe to ride a motorcycle in Morocco?
Yes, on a guided motorbike tour you are never alone. The group rides with a local guide who knows the tracks, the weather and the stops, and an assistance car follows behind with tools and first aid. As anywhere, ride within your limits, keep your valuables with you in busy places and check your own government’s travel advice. You can also read Is Morocco Safe? What Travelers Should Know (opens in a new tab).
Can my partner join without riding?
Yes. On an off-road tour, passengers do not ride on the back of the bike. A non-riding partner travels in the assistance car and sleeps in the same hotels and camp. Ask us for the companion price.
What happens if my motorcycle breaks down?
The assistance car follows the group with tools and spare parts, and your guide handles repairs on the road. If a bike cannot be fixed quickly, we replace it as soon as possible so you can continue the tour.
What is the best time of year for a motorcycle tour in Morocco?
October to April is the best season for off-road riding in the south. Summer days on the plains are very hot, often above 40°C, so we do not run the tour then, and winter mornings can be cold, so pack layers. Read more in Best Time to Visit Morocco (opens in a new tab).
How does payment work?
We ask for a 30% deposit to confirm your booking, and the remaining balance is paid on the first day of the tour. Send us your dates and group size through the form on this page or on WhatsApp, and we will confirm the details for your dates.
Are there toilets and showers in the desert camp?
Yes. All our tours include a private washroom with a shower at the desert camp. The hotels on the other nights have private bathrooms. Planning to see more of the region? Read Things to Do in Merzouga (opens in a new tab).
