5 Days Desert Tour from Errachidia to Marrakech (2 Nights in Desert)
Start your adventure right at the gates of the Sahara. Because SaharaVia is rooted locally in Errachidia, this unique 5-day tour bypasses the long initial mountain drives. You will immediately immerse yourself in the Erg Chebbi dunes for two unhurried nights before taking a spectacular, relaxed journey across the Valley of a Thousand Kasbahs and the High Atlas Mountains, finishing in vibrant Marrakech.

The SaharaVia Local Specialty, Extended
Most travelers spend an exhausting 18 hours in a car just to reach the desert. By starting your tour in our home base of Errachidia (home to Moulay Ali Cherif Airport), you eliminate the long drive on day one. This allows you to immediately drop your bags in the Sahara and relax.
Why this tour is unique
This itinerary is designed for travelers who want deep desert immersion without feeling rushed on their way to Marrakech. With two full nights in the dunes, you have an entire day dedicated solely to off-road 4×4 exploration, meeting nomadic Berber families, and listening to traditional Gnawa music. Your onward journey to Marrakech is then perfectly paced, allowing you to walk through towering canyons and explore ancient clay fortresses without ever having a grueling, 9-hour driving day.

The Oasis to Mountains Route
Your journey begins in Errachidia. We will head south through the spectacular Ziz Valley oasis to reach the towering dunes of Merzouga (Erg Chebbi) for a two-night stay. On day three, you will leave the desert and head west, walking through the Todra Gorge before sleeping in the Dades Valley. Day four explores the Kasbahs of Ouarzazate, and on the final day, you will cross the High Atlas Mountains to conclude your tour in Marrakech.
Day by day
Errachidia → Ziz Valley → Merzouga
Your SaharaVia driver will pick you up from the Errachidia airport or your hotel. We head south, stopping at a panoramic viewpoint overlooking the magnificent Ziz Valley oasis. We continue through Erfoud before the golden dunes of Erg Chebbi appear. Upon arriving in Merzouga, you will trade your vehicle for a camel, riding into the dunes at sunset to reach your desert camp for a night of Berber drumming and stargazing.
Deep Sahara Exploration (Merzouga & Khamlia)
Wake up early for a spectacular desert sunrise. Today is all about local immersion without the stress of a long drive. We will take a 4×4 off-road adventure around the dunes, visiting a nomadic family to learn about their traditional way of life. We will also visit Khamlia village to listen to traditional Gnawa music. Enjoy a relaxed afternoon sandboarding or resting at the camp before your second night in the Sahara.
Merzouga → Todra Gorge → Dades Valley
After breakfast, ride your camel back to the edge of the desert to meet your driver. We then journey toward the dramatic Todra Gorges. You’ll have free time to walk alongside the crystal-clear river flanked by massive limestone walls. We continue our drive through the scenic “Route of a Thousand Kasbahs” to reach our guesthouse in the Dades Valley.
Dades Valley → Valley of Roses → Ouarzazate
After breakfast, we drive through the Valley of Roses, famous for its annual spring harvest. We will then pass through the Skoura palm oasis, home to countless historic mud-brick fortresses, before arriving in Ouarzazate (the Hollywood of Africa). Here, we will visit the impressive Taourirt Kasbah and the Atlas Film Studios before checking into your Riad.
Ouarzazate → Ait Benhaddou → Marrakech
We start the day with a short drive to the spectacular Ait Benhaddou Kasbah, a UNESCO World Heritage site famous for its appearances in Gladiator and Game of Thrones. After exploring the ancient clay fortress, we ascend the High Atlas Mountains via the winding Tizi n’Tichka pass. Common questions
What time should my flight arrive in Errachidia?
For Day 1, we recommend arriving on a morning or early afternoon flight so we have plenty of time to drive through the Ziz Valley and arrive in Merzouga before the sunset camel trek.
Is the drive on Day 5 difficult?
Day 5 involves crossing the High Atlas Mountains. The roads are winding, but your local driver is highly experienced. We break the journey up with a leisurely visit to Ait Benhaddou and several stops for panoramic photos and coffee, so the drive feels like an adventure rather than a chore.
Are there toilets and showers in the desert camp?
If you book the Superior or Luxury packages, your private tent will have a fully functioning western toilet and hot shower inside. Comfort packages utilize clean, shared facilities.
Practical details
What to pack
You will experience multiple microclimates on this route. Bring comfortable layers, a warm fleece for the evening, a scarf to protect against sand, sunglasses, and sturdy walking shoes for the Todra Gorge and Ait Benhaddou.
Currency & payments
The local currency is the Moroccan Dirham (MAD). You should carry small amounts of cash for daytime drinks, lunches along the route, and tips, as many rural cafes do not accept credit cards.
Tipping
Tipping is customary in Morocco. Expect to tip camp staff, local Gnawa musicians, and local guides if you are happy with their service. A lump sum for your SaharaVia driver at the end of the trip in Marrakech is standard.
