The classic route, done properly
This is SaharaVia’s signature 7-day loop — the full arc from the ochre kasbahs of Ouarzazate through the river valleys of Dades and Todra, into the dunes of Erg Chebbi, and back over the High Atlas to Marrakech.
Rather than rushing the desert leg like most 3-day tours do, this itinerary gives you two full nights in the Sahara — one in a traditional Berber camp, one in a private luxury camp further into the dunes — with a full free day in between to actually experience the desert instead of just passing through it.

Day by day
Marrakech → Aït Ben Haddou → Ouarzazate
Depart Marrakech early and climb the Tizi n’Tichka pass through the High Atlas. Stop at Aït Ben Haddou, then continue to Ouarzazate — Morocco’s “Hollywood of the desert” — for the first overnight.
Ouarzazate → Skoura → Dades Gorge
Visit the palm oasis of Skoura before heading into the Dades Valley, known locally as the “Valley of a Thousand Kasbahs.” Overnight in a guesthouse right in the gorge.
Dades → Todra Gorge → Merzouga (Desert Camp 1)
Morning stop at Todra Gorge’s towering rock walls, then drive across the Rissani plains to Merzouga. In the late afternoon, mount camels for the trek into Erg Chebbi and arrive at camp in time for sunset over the dunes.
Sunrise + Full Day in Erg Chebbi (Desert Camp 2)
Watch sunrise from the dunes, then spend the day on 4×4 desert excursions, a visit to a nomad family, and optional sandboarding. In the afternoon, transfer deeper into the dunes to a private luxury camp for the second desert night.
Merzouga → Rissani → Zagora
Leave the dunes and pass through Rissani’s old caravan market town, then cross the Draa Valley — Morocco’s longest palm oasis — to Zagora for the night.
Zagora → Telouet Kasbah → Marrakech
Detour to the lesser-visited Telouet Kasbah before re-crossing the High Atlas back toward Marrakech, arriving in the evening for a final night in the Medina.

Moderate. Most days involve long drives with scenic stops rather than strenuous hiking. The camel trek is gentle, and no technical trekking experience is required.

Spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) offer the most comfortable desert temperatures. Summer can be extremely hot in Merzouga; winter nights in the desert get cold.
