Marrakech to Fes via the Sahara
You will depart Marrakech and head southeast across the High Atlas Mountains, exploring Ait Benhaddou before sleeping in the Dades Valley. On day two, you push east through the Todra Gorge to reach the Sahara dunes of Merzouga for your night in the desert camp. On the final day, you will head north from the desert, traveling through the Ziz Valley, the Middle Atlas Mountains, and Ifrane, arriving in Fes by the evening.

Your driver will pick you up early from your Marrakech accommodation. We ascend the High Atlas Mountains via the Tizi n’Tichka pass, stopping for panoramic photos of traditional Berber villages. Our main afternoon highlight is the UNESCO-listed Ait Benhaddou Kasbah. After exploring the ancient clay fortress and having lunch in Ouarzazate, we drive through the Valley of Roses to reach our guesthouse in the Dades Valley.
Dades Valley → Todra Gorge → Merzouga
Leave the lush valleys for the dramatic Todra Gorge, walking alongside a crystal-clear river flanked by towering limestone walls. Continue through Erfoud (the fossil capital) until the dunes of Erg Chebbi appear. In Merzouga, you will trade your vehicle for a camel, riding into the desert to watch the sunset before arriving at your camp for a magical night under the stars.

Wake up early to witness a breathtaking Sahara sunrise over the dunes. After breakfast, ride your camel back to the edge of the desert to meet your driver. Today is a long but incredibly scenic driving day heading north. We will travel through the massive palm groves of the Ziz Valley, cross the Middle Atlas Mountains, and stop in the cedar forests of Azrou to see the wild macaque monkeys. After a short stop in the alpine town of Ifrane, we will drop you off at your Riad in Fes in the early evening.

Is the drive on Day 3 too long?
Day 3 involves about 7.5 hours of driving to reach Fes. However, the scenery changes dramatically from desert to mountains to alpine forests. We break the journey up with several stops for coffee, lunch, panoramic photos in the Ziz Valley, and monkey spotting in the cedar forests, making the day feel like a true expedition rather than just a transfer.
Can I bring my large suitcase?
Yes. Since this is a one-way transfer from Marrakech to Fes, your driver will safely transport your main luggage in the vehicle. During the camel ride, your large bags will stay locked in the car, and you will only need a small backpack for your night in the desert.
Are there toilets and showers in the desert camp?
